Nag Panchami 2011
Nāg Panchamī is a festival celebrated by hindus, in some parts of India. During this festival, Religious Hindus worship either images of or live Nāgas (cobras) on the fifth day after Amavasya of the month of Shraavana.
Nag Panchami is celebrated to worship snakes. The victory of Krishna over the Kaliya snake is also remembered on this day. For this reason, Krishna is known as ‘Kaliya Mardan’. The festival celebrates during the rainy months. It is believed that the festival is to counter the increased possibility of snakebite during this time.
On this day married women and the girls wake up early in the morning, take head bath, arrange the things necessary for puja and start to reach a nearest AntHill(Snake’s Home). They offer puja and Milk to the Ant Hill and pray to Snake God(Indian Cobra – Lord Subramanya’s Incarnation) for the Wellness of their brothers and their family. This day is like RakshaBandhan for South Indian Hindus.
